02 / Choosing & Using
Choosing the right bathroom tile
Material
Porcelain vs ceramic
Porcelain is denser and less porous, the better choice for floors and wet areas. Ceramic is lighter and cheaper, and is the usual choice for walls.
Safety
Slip resistance
Any floor tile in a bathroom, and especially a wet room or shower, should carry an R-rating (commonly R9 to R11). Ask our team for the right rating.
Layout
Size for small bathrooms
Larger tiles with fewer grout lines can make a small bathroom feel more open; small mosaics suit shower floors that need a fall to drain.
Finishing
Grout & sealing
Grout colour changes the whole look. Natural stone-look and genuine stone tiles may need sealing, which we will flag if it applies to your range.
03 / Materials
Ceramic vs porcelain
| Factor | Ceramic | Porcelain |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom walls | Excellent, the standard choice | Suitable but often unnecessary cost |
| Bathroom floors | Workable in low-moisture areas | Better, the standard for wet areas |
| Water resistance | Good | Very high, lower porosity |
| Durability | Good for typical use | Higher, better for heavy use |
| Large format availability | Limited | Wide, including slabs |
| Typical best use | Walls, splashbacks | Floors, wet rooms, large format |

Expert Advice
“The most common bathroom question we get is porcelain or ceramic, and the honest answer is both, ceramic on the walls to keep the budget sensible, porcelain on the floor where it needs to cope with water. Always take a floor sample home and stand on it wet, that R-rating on paper means more when you have felt it underfoot.”
